Mahjong 101½: Beyond the Basics (04.13.2026, Wake Forest)
NOW USING 2026 NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE CARD!
Mahjong 101½ is designed for players who have completed Mahjong 101 or already know the fundamentals of American mahjong but aren’t quite ready to jump into fully independent open play. This class bridges the gap between learning the rules and truly understanding strategy. You’ve learned the basics. You understand the tiles. You’ve played a few hands. Now it’s time to build confidence.
In this session, we focus on:
Faster hand selection
Reading the National Mah Jongg League card with confidence
When and how to pivot mid-hand
Recognizing dead hands early
Basic defensive play
Tile efficiency and smarter discards
One of the most powerful tools we use is open-hand play. By playing with tiles exposed for select rounds, you’ll see strategy unfold in real time, sharpen your pattern recognition, and learn how experienced players think through decisions.
By the end of class, you will:
Choose hands more quickly
Pivot without panic
Feel comfortable navigating the Charleston
Read exposures at the table
Walk into open play with confidence
This class is ideal for players who:
Have taken Mahjong 101
Have played a few games but feel unsure
Want structured strategy before attending Guided Play
Are ready to level up their mahjong skills
Seats are limited to ensure personal attention and a supportive environment.
